Homework Due:
Your assignment is to describe in writing a curriculum that “bridges the gap” between the two lists we created today (who you are as teenagers and who you need to become to be successful adults). Your curriculum does not have to be traditional. Write about the subjects and courses that you think would turn you into successful adults.

These are some questions I wrote on the board to get you thinking:

  1. What subjects or courses will you require to “bridge the gap”? Will there be any electives? If so, what might they be?
  2. How much of the curriculum should be focused on academics? On social skills?
  3. Should the curriculum be strictly practical or are there things that are worth learning for learning’s sake?
  4. Are there any projects students NEED to complete before they leave high school to show that they’ve learned all that they should?

Your description should be between 200 and 400 words.

Daily Goal(s):
Today goal is for you to understand the basic organization of our curriculum. You’ll also learn the following terms: Habit of Mind, Complex Reasoning, Content Knowledge.

Lesson Plan:
We’ll start class today by chatting a bit about the ideas you wrote about for homework. Once we had a chance to share, we’ll start in on the lesson.

First, we’re going to explore the diagram below, which is the outline of the ASD Curriculum:

I’ll explain the basic terminology associated with each area. This will involve a short lecture and slideshow (slides 1-6) that will likely take about 20 minutes.

Next, we’ll put your understanding to the test. We’re going to break a familiar task (PB & J anyone?) according to reasoning, knowledge, and habits of mind. There will be more specific directions on this in class. Once we’re done with a familiar task, we’ll then break down a more academic one.

There is no assigned homework.
